13-08-2009 | 't BUURTHUIS
Another great exhibition at your favorite art space!

KOP shows contemporary art and design in an experimental context. Objective is to stimulate new ways of interpreting daily life and being a professional partner for artist developing their career in The Netherlands. As curator I am responsible for all exhibitions and events.

From the 12th of September 2009 till the first of November 2009, the exhibition space will transform to a community centre ('t BUURTHUIS in Dutch). KOP wants to present contemporary art and design in an unconventional way. This exhibition will not focus on an aesthetic presentation of the artworks; instead it will focus on the interaction between visitor and art/design. This exhibition wants to show how art and design relate to ordinary life.

Invited designers include: 5.5 designers (FRA), Atelier Blink (BE), Zelda Beauchampet, Blokmeubel, Sander Bokkinga, Buro Jet, Dennis de Bel, Jaap de Jonge, David Graas, Frank Halmans, Susanna Hertrich (GER), Pieter Jamart (SUI), Zowie Jannink, Chris Kabel, Kristof Kintera (CZ), Eric Klarenbeek, Robert Knight, Theo Konijnenburg, Sander Lucas, David Moises (AU), Sander Mulder, Oooms, Tom Reijnders, Sander Reijgers, Martin Robitsch (AU), Snode vormgevers, Diane Steverlynck (BE), Sebastiaan Straatsma, Superflex (DK), Hans Tan, Mark van den Gronden, Louise van der Veld, Ward van Gemert, Maurice van Telingen, Rob Verwer, Jonas Vorwerk, Tijmen Zonnevijle and more...

25-06-2009 | Hier & Daar
June 25 - August 23, 2009 in Breda and Eindhoven (NL)

A psychedelic print with sound effects, an analogue TV animation, a carrousel full of images, an architectural dream, typographical reflections and a painted-over short-fronted farmhouse. A random sample of what will be on view this summer during the exhibition HIER&DAAR.
At the invitation of MU and KOP, 20 promising artists and designers from Breda and Eindhoven, all born after 1970, show new work in two groups both in Eindhoven and in Breda. Brabant-wide, so to say.

There is between MU and KOP a feeling of kinship that expresses itself in the hybrid way in which they perceive the art world. The motto is: quality in imagination, diversity in media and disciplines, and an open collaboration with promising young artists. There is absolutely no curatorial straitjacket. HIER&DAAR encourages artists to achieve on a modest working budget a professional presentation in the two most exciting art spaces of Brabant.

HIER&DAAR also represents the first step of two medium-sized art institutes in making an initial open-collaboration contribution to the Brabant ambitions to become Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018. In the coming years, it will be easy for other parties from the various BrabantSteden (BrabantCities) to link up with this initiative and in a few triple jumps present a sample of the rich cultural humus of the provinces in the Southern Netherlands.

25-11-2008 | Electron 2.0

Sven Fritz – Een monumentale installatie waarin geheel Electron reflecteerd.

(16.00 – 02.00 uur) toekomstbeelden

27-08-2008 | Jordi Bernado
For years I've been a great fan of Jordi Bernado's work.  Now I finally had the chance to curate an exhibition on this Spanish photographer.

Please come and check out:

Jordi Bernadó (Breda Photo 2008)

26/09/2008 – 02/10/2008
Tue-Sun 11:00 – 17:00h
Stichting KOP, Speelhuislaan 171, Breda
Opening Friday 26 September 2008 19:00h

Jordi Bernadó
During Breda Photo 2008, KOP presents works of the Spanish photographer Jordi Bernadó (Lleida, 1966). Bernadó has been a renowned photographer for years with exhibitions in museums all over the world. His vast series are usually bound in book form. This is Bernadó’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands.

Bernadó is a self-taught man. Although being educated as an architect, he accidentally became a photographer. For years now, he’s been working with the same technical camera and just one lens. These are his sole instruments as he travels the world, working on commissions for large parties like architects and fashion brands. Whilst working on commissions, his own work comes into being. Often just by turning the camera for 90 degrees, he switches from assignment to the apparently ordinary life.

Jordi Bernadó looks upon his surroundings through a lens of humour and irony. The large series prove that it is no coincidence Bernadó’s always at the place at the right moment. With his autonomous work he shows without any manipulation or attitude the beauty of moment we would normally just miss in the rush of the day. Common beauty sometimes influenced by the touch of man. Bernadó doesn’t deny his heritage, wherever his pictures are taken, the colours seem to directly reflect to the Mediterranean.

Completely in line with Breda Photo’s main theme, curator Dennis Elbers selected works from Bernadó’s huge collected works. This results in two series that create an image of Bernadó’s ‘heimat’ and his view on the world abroad.

The exhibition is opened on Friday September 26 from 19:00 and is naturally set in Spanish style.
Those interested are most welcome.

Bernadó’s most recent books will be for sale during the exhibition, including ‘Lucky Looks’, in which Bernardó gives an intriguing image of modern Spain.

Dutch talent.
Accompanying Bernadò’s work are two talented Dutch photographers on display: Sjoerd Knibbeler and Job Janssen. They too light-heartedly zoom in at the world’s special landscapes.

Sjoerd Knibbeler (Weert, 1981) graduated at KABK (Royal Academy of Art) this year. Knibbeler is looking for strange worlds; micro cultures he is no part of himself, but which everybody knows. With his series ‘Er tussen uit’ Knibbeler breaks with the recognizable image of the leisure industry. In a time where the spoiled and boredom-prone consumer is constantly looking for new experiences, he shows us something the consumer does not get to see: ‘the making of’.

Job Janssen (Boxmeer, 1978) graduated at AKV|St.Joost in 2005. Joost van der Vaart (NRC Handelsblad newspaper) comments: “… some time ago he took his camera eastbound – ‘Go East, Young Man!’- and started a new life in Germany’s capital. Now he too is ein Berliner, just like the many who gone before and found a new heimat here. Janssen is a cultural street dog, an artist with a keen eye for what happens around him. And in Berlin, a lot is happening.” At KOP, Janssen shows what is going around on the streets of Berlin these days.

01-07-2008 | GDFB
A brand new festival on graphic design is born. For six weeks Breda (NL) was the centre of attention for those who are interested in graphic design. GDFB presented various forms of graphic design in the public space, but the festival also included exhibitions, workshops and lectures. Over 100 international designers participated in these projects.

At different sites around the city exhibitions, lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations and unexpected confrontations take place. Not only at the known cultural institutions but also in public space. Bus shelters, projections and installations fill Breda’s city centre with graphic design.
The Graphic Design Festival Breda (GDFB) shows that graphic design does not just exist in print and is not bound by the window of a screen. GDFB shows all areas involved in graphic design and reflects its contemporary character.

More than 30 activities are scheduled, some last only for a day, some for the whole six weeks. Some of the projects are set up by the festival’s organisation, moreover, GDFB acts as a co-producer for several national and local organisations and institutions.
The diversity of graphic design can now be explored by broad audiences, either mainstream or specialised, of all ages. Anyone will be able to create a suitable programme of his or her liking on www.graphicdesignfestival.nl

A selection of the programme
Projector Spectre: At 10 different sites around the city, animations are projected on buildings. These animations are designed by Fons Schiedon, I Love Dust, Mark Verhaagen, Slang international, Sophie Toulouse, Studio Smack, We Work For Them, OK Parking, Battery Battery and B-Total.

Mupi-project: 67 (inter)national designers created 67 posters on exhibition on the streets of Breda.

Golden Age: The highlights of 100 years of Dutch graphic design in Breda’s Museum. Premsela and Graphic Design Museum’s international exhibition on tour. Visiting The Netherlands for the first time.

Kijk mijn wijk (explore my neighbourhood): 1800 pupils of local primary schools are introduced to graphic design by means of a special project. After visiting the Graphic Design Museum, they create a design of their favorite spot in town. The results are on display throughout the city on 28 and 29 June.

A further explanation of all activities on the website, check out www.graphicdesignfestival.nl

15-01-2008 | KOP at Project(or), Rotterdam
During Art Rotterdam, from February 6-10, showroom MAMA will host Prject(or) at the old postoffice on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam. KOP is present among 23 other international artist spaces. I curated KOP's contribution to this project by selecting David Herbert (USA) and Willum Geerts (NL). Both artist work from a social point of view and display their vision on today consumersociety.

David Herbert is a recent graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Centering on well-known American icons as the Statue of Liberty, his sculptures tackle the idea of civilization as a whole in final stages of collapse and disintegration. At Project(or) Herbert will present the Statue of Death along his version of the Statue of Liberty.

Willum Geerts quotes out of everyday life. He looks for things that everyone recognizes, or adapts and endures without consideration: like conventions, trends, hypes, appearance, clichés or overkill. Geerts enlarges the ordinary by adding dramatic, theatrical elements to it, isolating it from its regular context or mixing it with apparently opposites. Often with a humorous and ironic approach, which results in confusion, relativatization and yet more absurdity.

The presentation will be completed by a special edition designed by graphic designer Rob van Hoesel (NL). Van Hoesel was recently awarded a Dutch ‘best verzorgde boeken 2006’ award and is shortlisted for the ‘Der Schonste Bucher aus aller Welt’ competition with his book Transitland.

17-12-2007 | Tactile Tactics at Villanuts, The Hague (NL)
For Villanuts (The Hague, NL) I guest-curated an exhibition called 'TACTILE TACTICS'. An exhibition of 3d works originating from drawings.

In a world were borders between art genres and styles seem to fade away, new tactics are employed to show drawings. All participating artist grew up in present time, their work is influenced by the world surrounding us. Drafts out of dummies are made tactile in various ways. Some seem fragile others are solid, but these clever brief outlines always express a current and personal observation. One that puzzles and validates the viewers perspective.

Works by Joost Halbertsma (nl - sculpture, installation), David Herbert (usa - sculpture, videos), Jak Peters (nl - sculpture, performance), Naomi Taverdin (nl - installation).

Opening January 10th at 20 hrs.

15-11-2007 | Associated Designers Network
An exhibition at the KOP foundation of 3 collaborations between (inter)national Graphic Designers. The exhibition runs from November 30th untill January 20th.

Information from the pressrelease in Dutch:
CMYTwerk (Tilburg)

08-10-2007 | TM-City at KOP
As an annoucement of the Graphic Design Festival Breda, I'm working on a special exhibition. From November 30th untill January 20th Richard Niessens' TM-City can be seen at KOP.

TM-City forms a gesamtkunstwerk and overview exhibition of Richard Niessens' graphic work. It has eight neighbourhoods, made out of more than 150 works.

Since he builds with graphic elements like fonts, shapes and colours, he took it one step further by actually building a city out of his designs: flyers are stacked to form skyscrapers, posters are laid out to become parks. TM-City is fully traversable. People can walk down the streets, named after his sources of inspiration, such as Richard Rogers and Eduardo Paolozzi.

TM-City also has been designed to be mobile and easy to transport. Each neighbourhood, individually wrapped in handmade covers, fits inside its wooden base.

This exhibition will be completed with an opening ceromony, lectures and side-projects. Be on the look-out for the specially designed invitations.

This exhibition is a co-production of Richard Niessen, Chaumont Festival, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, KOP and GDFB.
